Sigmund Freud, Anne Freud, and Edward Bernays: the Godparents of Public Relations

Mark popped me these BBC TV shows months ago and I only had time to watch them last night and they're very interesting and wonderful insight into the last century of public relations. This series, The Century of the Self, asserts that Sigmund Freud, Anne Freud, and -- most importantly -- Edward Bernays, were the godparents of modern PR, marketing, advertising, and also political strategy. Business representatives, who often associate with libertarian politics are shown here to fear public free will, advocating social control thru media manipulation.

The collective unconscious is used as excuse for individual brutality.

We libertarians demand that complete freedom needs to also be polite freedom. This freedom cannot touch. It cannot "tread on me." I think many Libertarians don't fancy that the collective unconscious can be allowed such responsibility -- they're always exerting their freedom on other people, which is not only merely unacceptable but also punishable -- poor form being a punishable offense.
