On the Memetic Nature of Language and Languages

Although it is only a part of a larger discussion about Nordicism and Nationalism, I really love what "Anon" said about the life, growth, culture, and evolution of language, which is also a fantastic definition of memetics, too:

"The differences that accumulate between languages, say, German and English, are driven more by random drift than anything else. The same is true of the 'cultures' that the Romantic nationalists glorify. Here we also find very similar customs that come to differ in small ways due to the inevitable effect of memetic drift through history. Customs like national borders, sports, favorite foods, favorite beers, colors of the national flag, holidays, religion, language — none are heritable, all must be learned. There is no reason why the negro can’t acquire all of these traits and become a perfectly good 'American' or 'Frenchman'"
