middle-aged eccentric professor is believed to have become the first person in the world to have propelled himself into space by way of a home-made rocket, and WITHOUT the help of any major space agency.  Apparently this has upset the Chinese too.  Full story:-

This site lists "approved sites" that MUST monitor Nuclear Launches and explosions around the world. It IS in Greenland. There is NO indication of "launch" capabilities. BUT, if the CHinese are "bitching" it may be because of a "failure" to "confirm" situation. In other words, China (no nation) has standing to complain about a NUCLEAR DETONATION unless the "DETONATION" can be confirmed by at least one "Signatory" to the Test Ban Treaty. To make a long story short.."SOMETHING HIT CHINA" or "FLEW OVER CHINA" it couldn't have originated at "This particular base". IF something "NUCLEAR" HIT...no wonder they are bitching. OF course, if you know my reputation, we all need to think back to the "MISSING NUKES IN THAT FLIGHT FROM MONTANA TO NEW ORLEANS>! most the Ground crew, at both ends and co-pilots are now dead. go figure!

Maybe they got caught sending nukes to the middle east and then had to deny it.
No witnesses means no crime.

The treaty is decades old. This facility is "crispy clean". This is about a "Global Hawk"? If you look at the "waviness" of the "paint stripes" at the Greenland "launch" site it is an indication of Heavy payloads.  A payload you would need to circumnavigate the entire globe.  I have a hard time believing that the Denmark would get caught up in a launch of a Global Hawk from that location. But stranger things!

If it was launched "Southward" toward Antartica, it would have popped back into Chinese Satellite view right at about the exact "anti-pode" in the South Pole...due to positioning of the Chinese equipment.  From China's perspective, it's just "nasty" to "ship" a Global Hawk from the South to North over China.

From the CHinse perspective it would have appeared to originate from the Antararctic.  Eventually, someone figured out it "took off" from the Greenland Base in question.  Nuclear "tipped" Global Hawks are extremely "rare" not to mention illegal.  If we or the British "over-flew" China with a GH..that was really rude!

If it was "armed"...that's just stupid!  I can see someone trying to make a very "heavy point" about China "elbowing US Military out of oil fields in Khazakhstan..but a "hot hawk" is just nasty.  If it BLEW, atmospheric...I 'm amazed we haven't seen a "retal" yet.

Then again, if you consider the US Navy is about to launch and bring down a "rogue" satellite over the US (which I  believe is a Chines spysat  & NOT, a broken arrow...) then this all makes sense but it's still rude!

Final thought. I hope to god this isn't a 3rd party. We know we've lost track of up to 3 GLobal Hawks. (One hit the Pentagon).  and now, about 5 "Predator Nukes".   They can be reconfigured for the GH...but that would take some real expertise.   This is all just bullshit and conjecture. The "eccentric nut case" story is pure COVER!

I wrote a story about something like this back a while ago (For nanowrimo (http://nanowrimo.org), it was much too short but fun anyway). I think I'll go back and change it. I love stories like this, where the character works on something in secret then suddenly amazes everyone :)

I pride myself in being able to determine when something is a hoax or not, but in this instance I am genuinely stumped.

Lol, sounds like a good joke and the story is bound to be everywhere soon, but it looks completely bogus.
Most, if not all, new space vehicles crash on their first try. There are just so many things that can go wrong, and orbital rockets are so complex, that really the first few launches are part of the design process. This means this guy would have had to launch at least one un-manned rocket, and at that point we'd have all heard about it.

There are other things that sound suspicious. A 30 meter tall rocket, while large, would still make it the smallest rocket ever able to put a man in orbit, an incredible (an unlikely) engineering feat. Even more so because the launch site, Greenland, is at a very high latitude. Most rocket launch sites are as close to the equator as possible, since Earth's tangential velocity is greatest there and this boosts the rocket's speed, making it much, much easier to reach orbit.

Completely bogus, but still, I expect to see this everywhere in a few days.

That's the only way to know whether anything really happened. Someone, somewhere, knows whether there really was a launch.

I googled "Neil Abraham" and found only this message and some obviously irrelevant ones. Most billionaries are secretive, but this one is better than most.

just got sent this taken from chinese state tv and relates to the complaint made by the chinese government. looks like they were pretty pissed after all.

That's the only way to know.

Yeah, if someone actually launched there's no way the Western media would permit the story to be spread around. No one in the Western governments can handle individuals these days.

The story was big elsewhere? Someone had to keep a copy of those messages and reports.

Be careful, though: a quick Google search for "Neil Abraham" reveals this news article but so far I can't see anything else about the guy.

Okay i have a few problems with this cos I saw this on NBC news a few weeks back and this has nothing to do with the chinese thing at all. According to the TV report the guy who launched himself into space was part of a some luxury domesday cult based in Greenland (think WACO meets SPECTRE) but he wasn't a billionaire, he just shafted a load of money from the russians. The CHINESE thing is something COMPLETELY different. I KNOW this because I have a copy of the Beijing Evening News right in front of me right now and it's talking about complaints made by the government in regard to a single massive illegal rocket launch at GPS 67.0° 50.6° which is wayyy down south in ANTARTICA. (.....not Greenland dude)

Don't forget that the chinese write their co-ordinates BACKWARDS. Looks like you have your locations in a muddle.

Try reversing them and then you'll be right on the money.

HINT: http://fuseurop.univ-perp.fr/b_tmp_e.htm

(50.6°W, 67.0°N) IS GREENLAND!!

The Professor Meme and the Chinese Complaint Meme are the same!!
I just google-mapped the co-ordinates and LOOK:-

And look at this:-

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=67%C2%B000%E2%80%B238%E...

hahahaha - i was reading something about this a few weeks ago.....it's hilarious.... apparently Greenland isn't the best place to launch a rocket from due to it's distance from the equator but the guy had no choice because as it was the only place he could pull it off without being detected.........fucking genius though.

the thing that strikes me most about this is that this is HUGE NEWS in China ...it's everywhere.....and yet not a peep out of the Western media outlets??.....reminds me when Israel launched that aistrike against Syria.....not a word.

I have searched the web this morning for more info on this, the ONLY two references to this story I can find are this site and an identical worded story at the dodgy newspaper site the Post Chronicle. No Chinese news site I searched had this story.

yea it's strange - it's almost like the masters of the internet have pulled the plug on the entire story......last week it was everywhere....and now just vanished. i had this bookmarked last week:-
