MINNEAPOLIS, March 20, 2001 - ONTRACK Data International, Inc. (NASDAQ: ONDI), a leading provider of data availability software and service solutions, today announced that the U.S. Secret Service has awarded the Secret Service Plaque of Appreciation to the company for its computer forensic support during a four-year criminal investigation involving computer sabotage at a Connecticut-based manufacturing company. Tapping Ontrack's Electronic Information Management (EIM) business unit and data recovery expertise, the U.S. Secret Service was able to piece together the evidence that led to the culprit's arrest and prosecution.
"The Secret Service has greatly benefited from Ontrack's accomplishments in the area of equipment research and data analysis," said Brian L. Stafford, U.S. Secret Service director. "Ontrack provided the Secret Service with the highest degree of support. Their talent for interpreting and translating data into meaningful dialogue was an essential element of the investigation."
Ontrack's computer forensic and data recovery experts specialize in helping companies and organizations collect, preserve, investigate, recover and document electronic information surrounding a chain of events for use in a court of law. These experts deploy proprietary searching and analysis capabilities to systematically examine all the hidden information associated with electronic files by providing the history surrounding the content of the records, which can prove informative to investigators and the court.
In the Secret Service's investigation of computer sabotage at the Connecticut-based manufacturing company, Ontrack examined a file server and other media that had files suspiciously deleted, and untangled six lines of malicious code that were responsible for destroying all the files necessary to run manufacturing operations. Once they made this discovery, it became apparent that the culprit responsible for the sabotage was the former network administrator-the only person with access to the system at that time. Armed with this evidence, the Secret Service was able to seek federal prosecution for the crime. Additionally, two Ontrack engineers testified as expert witnesses for the prosecution, explaining the results of their technical investigation to the jury and the court.
"Drawing from our 15 years of experience in data recovery and expertise in searching electronic information, we were able to provide electronic evidence containing a basis of proof that included inherent dates, creation and distribution of information to reveal the electronic 'paper trail' in the Secret Service investigation," said Greg Olson director of Worldwide Data Recovery Services, Ontrack. "We were honored to work with the Secret Service to help them seek justice in this case by piecing together the evidence that led to the culprit's prosecution."

It seems the Security Company for WTC and Iraq and the Secret Service should be able to "recover" that lost CIA tape of Bush torturing suspects in New Jersey..in a jiffy! Should also be able to recover at least 3.1 of the 3.2 million emails that Rove erased. This is too, easy! They're just getting sloppy now!
